Real wood, fewer problems
Engineered hardwood has a genuine wood wear layer over a cross built core. It looks like solid wood because the top of it is solid wood, but the layered core makes it far more stable when the humidity swings. It comes prefinished, so there is no sanding, no staining, no fumes in the house and no waiting days before you can walk on it.
The one place it clearly beats solid
Basements and concrete slabs. Solid hardwood over a slab is asking for trouble. Engineered handles it, and depending on the product and the subfloor we can float it, glue it down or nail it, which gives us options solid wood does not.
Wear layer is the number that matters
The thickness of the real wood on top is what decides whether the floor can ever be refinished and how long it lasts. Thin wear layers are where cheap engineered wood gets cheap. When you are comparing two products, tell us the wear layer thickness on each and we will tell you which one is actually the better buy.
